Storytelling Program (Online Creative Writing Workshop)
Run by Laura Melkonian / Cyprus Chapter
February-April 2026

Starting from February 2026, a Storytelling Program was conducted by Laura Melkonian, an experienced author. The program was designed for teenagers aged 11–13, recognizing their rich imagination and creativity.

It brought together eight participants from the Gyumri community and Artsakh families currently residing in Yerevan. Through various storytelling activities and creative writing exercises, participants were encouraged to develop their imagination, self-expression and communication skills.

This program aimed to help students explore their imagination, develop original ideas, and understand how stories are created for books, films, and screenplays. Throughout this workshop series, participants were introduced to the fundamentals of creative writing and storytelling, with a focus on both novel writing and scriptwriting. During the sessions, students learned about important writing elements such as character creation, setting and atmosphere, plot development, conflict, dialogue, narration, descriptive writing, and creative literary devices including metaphors, similes, and onomatopoeia. They were also introduced to the basics of scriptwriting, including screenplay formatting, scene structure, and the use of INT./EXT. scene headings.

The workshops were designed to be interactive and practical. Students completed writing exercises, character-building activities, creative challenges, and short story assignments after each session. Homework tasks encouraged participants to continue developing their stories, improve descriptions, create stronger dialogue, and experiment with both novel and screenplay formats.

As a final assignment, students prepared and presented their own original stories and script scenes, applying the techniques and concepts covered throughout the workshop. The students also had the opportunity to experience the creative process from multiple perspectives, including that of producers, screenwriters, narrators, and performers. Through collaborative activities and mini role-play performances, they worked together to bring their own stories and scenes to life.

This hands-on experience allowed participants to better understand how a film or theatre production is developed, from the writing stage to performance and presentation. In addition, these activities helped strengthen their teamwork, communication, creativity, and group collaboration skills in an engaging and supportive environment. These presentations also allowed participants to showcase their creativity, imagination, and growth as young writers.

Overall, the workshop provided a supportive and creative environment where students could strengthen their storytelling abilities, express their ideas confidently, and take their first steps into the world of writing and script development.

As a culmination of the program, participants actively shared their feedback and received surprise certificates prepared by Laura. Thanks to her dedication and expertise, the program became a reality and was one of the most appreciated and enjoyable programs among the young participants.
